Xbox Live rebranded to Xbox network by Microsoft

Xbox Live rebranded to Xbox network by Microsoft

Xbox Live is no more; say hello Xbox network.

As spotted by folks on Twitter - and later confirmed to The Verge - Microsoft has tweaked the name of its online service, which has been known as Xbox Live since its launch back in 2002.

Apparently, the decision is to help make clearer the difference between the Big M's online service from products like Xbox Live Gold.

"'Xbox network' refers to the underlying Xbox online service, which was updated in the Microsoft Services Agreement," a Microsoft spokesperson said.

"The update from 'Xbox Live' to 'Xbox network' is intended to distinguish the underlying service from Xbox Live Gold memberships."

Word that a change of name was hinted at in August of last year when Microsoft updated its Term of Services Agreement, but at the time the Big M said that it had no plans to rebrand its online service.

As of March 2020, Microsoft reports that Xbox Live boasts 90 million users.
